Cedar Swamp Corridor

The Cedar Swamp Road corridor in Glen Cove is a local gateway leading to downtown Glen Cove and a key economic and social component of the City. However, the corridor lacks a clear and coherent vision of what it should be and how it should best serve the people of Glen Cove. Currently, the corridor contains a mix of uses, building types and street elements that lack consistency and coherency. Although concepts such as a new “Little Italy” have been proposed over the years, none have yet to take hold.

This study, which is sponsored by Nassau County and the City of Glen Cove, will analyze the Cedar Swamp Corridor in Glen Cove and make recommendations to improve the economic viability of the corridor, improve pedestrian connectivity and traffic circulation and identify opportunities to provide appropriate housing opportunities.

These recommendations will address specific goals identified in Nassau County’s New Suburbia economic development initiative by encouraging public participation, community consensus and private development to achieve the following:

a. encourage and support the economic revitalization of downtown;
b. develop affordable and workforce housing;
c. improve public transit linkages and usage;
d. address the needs of minority and low-income communities;
e. support the redevelopment of brownfield properties.

A PUBLIC VISIONING AND INFORMATION SESSION WAS HELD AT SAINT ROCCO’S CHURCH ON MARCH 6, 2008.
